Smoked Old Fashioned
Each week, Chili and I showcase a cocktail on our live broadcast, The Davises Eat. This year, we have been virtually traveling the U.S. – something that came from the pandemic – and learning about American regional cuisine. It has been a fun theme for the show this year and we have enjoyed sharing these foods… and cocktails… with you!
Episode: Nevada and Sin City
On our last episode, we focused on Nevada cuisine.
It is difficulty to think of Nevada without thinking of Las Vegas. Our drink and appetizer – shrimp cocktail – were inspired by out many travels to Las Vegas. We also dove into Nevada heritage with a chicken and pepper dish inspired by American-Basque Cuisine. These stories and recipes are all part of our Smoked Old Fashioned Recipe
Our Smoked Old Fashioned was inspired by the Rat Pack and their days in Las Vegas, but specifically by Frank Sinatra and his love of Jack Daniels. This love did a lot for helping Jack Daniels become one of the World’s most loved whiskey. Until Sinatra carried a rocks glass on stage in 1955 and introduced Jack Daniels, the company was still a small distillery, producing around 150,000 cases of it’s whiskey each year. The following year, that doubled… and the rest, as they say, is history. We took Sinatra’s favorite drink and upped the ante a bit with a smoking gun. Why not? It is Vegas… but I mean a culinary smoking gun! Sure, maybe it was an excuse to buy the smoke gun. It was also a lot of fun experimenting with it. We smoked ice cubes and the cocktail. You can see how we did that on The Davises Eat episode. Here’s a link to the smoke gun we have. It’s inexpensive, but is good quality. It also came with smoke disks, which you will want for cocktails or other small dishes. You can purchase accessories, too, to smoke larger quantities of food – like potato salad or seafood.
