My “One Lovely Blog Award” Surprise
I received a wonderful surprise last night when I checked in on Twitter … Valerie Hughes, who writes Genealogy with Valerie, nominated me for the “One Lovely Blog Award”. I am very honored to be recognized by such a great blogger and author! Thank you, Valerie!

Seven Random Things About Niki
- I fell in love with history when I was 11 years old and watched Patrick Swayze in the North and South miniseries. I was smitten with Ory Maine and John Jakes!
- My mom wanted to name me Phoebe after my Grandpa’s mom. He wouldn’t let her because he thought babies should be given a name of their own. I named my daughter Phoebe … I didn’t ask for permission!
- I twirled a flag in my high school marching band and went another four years as a Marching Saluki in college!
- I didn’t like to cook when I was a kid.
- I was born in Carbondale, Illinois and never moved away …my family has been in the area for 200 years.
- I love liver and onions with mashed potatoes … and I’ve eaten bison, venison, goose, duck, quail, pheasant, rabbit, frog legs, alligator, crawdads, barbecued raccoon, black pudding, head cheese, rocky mountain oysters, fried squirrel and a squirrel head … maybe I should write a post about that one! Some of these gross MPG out 🙂
- Scott Fitzgerald and his Great Gatsby are the reason I have a passion for writing. That book changed my life.

Congratulations ~ well deserved! I’m so glad you were chosen for this award, and I love reading all about you and the others who have responded. But you didn’t cook as a child? I can’t believe that one…and I won’t even go into the one that started with liver! LOL Great list – thanks for sharing these.
Well, I think that ‘no cooking as a child’ thing had more to do with my Mom and I being in the kitchen at the same time. We’re both Type A, so the kitchen was never big enough! We’re better, now, though 🙂
I am so flattered to be included in your list. Thank you!
It was fun reading about you. Squirrel’s head? That is a new one for me! I would love to see a post about the more unusual foods you have tried and if everything ‘tastes like chicken’?
Not everything tastes like chicken 🙂 Growing up in a family of hunters means you get to eat some pretty unusual stuff by most people’s standards. To us, it’s just normal. That squirrel head was a sneaky trick my grandpa did to me when I was little. He was a stinker that way!
Thank your for your kind nomination, and let me add that I find your blog a very enjoyable read http://familystoriesphotographsandmemories.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/thank-you-for-your-one-lovely-blog.html
You’re so very welcome!
Dear Niki,
Thank you so much for including me on your list! I’m really honored, but I’m also very embarrassed as I haven’t said thank you until now. Looking at the date, I realize that it was when I had travelled to Scotland last year and was gone for a month, and just came across this now on a google search, so please accept my apologies!
I love that you love black pudding!! 🙂
Christina
Now I’m just jealous you were in Scotland! I hope you had a wonderful trip 🙂
