I received a wonderful surprise last night when I checked in on Twitter … Valerie Hughes, who writes Genealogy with Valerie, nominated me for the “One Lovely Blog Award”. I am very honored to be recognized by such a great blogger and author! Thank you, Valerie!

The rules for this award are as follows:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to that blog
  2. Share seven things about yourself
  3. Nominate 15 bloggers you admire (or as many as you can think of!)
  4. Contact your bloggers to let them know that you’ve tagged them for the One Lovely Blog Award

Seven Random Things About Niki

  1. I fell in love with history when I was 11 years old and watched Patrick Swayze in the North and South miniseries. I was smitten with Ory Maine and John Jakes!
  2. My mom wanted to name me Phoebe after my Grandpa’s mom. He wouldn’t let her because he thought babies should be given a name of their own. I named my daughter Phoebe … I didn’t ask for permission!
  3. I twirled a flag in my high school marching band and went another four years as a Marching Saluki in college!
  4. I didn’t like to cook when I was a kid.
  5. I was born in Carbondale, Illinois and never moved away …my family has been in the area for 200 years.
  6. I love liver and onions with mashed potatoes … and I’ve eaten bison, venison, goose, duck, quail, pheasant, rabbit, frog legs, alligator, crawdads, barbecued raccoon, black pudding, head cheese, rocky mountain oysters, fried squirrel and a squirrel head … maybe I should write a post about that one! Some of these gross MPG out 🙂
  7. Scott Fitzgerald and his Great Gatsby are the reason I have a passion for writing. That book changed my life.

  1. Congratulations ~ well deserved! I’m so glad you were chosen for this award, and I love reading all about you and the others who have responded. But you didn’t cook as a child? I can’t believe that one…and I won’t even go into the one that started with liver! LOL Great list – thanks for sharing these.

    1. Well, I think that ‘no cooking as a child’ thing had more to do with my Mom and I being in the kitchen at the same time. We’re both Type A, so the kitchen was never big enough! We’re better, now, though 🙂

  2. I am so flattered to be included in your list. Thank you!

It was fun reading about you. Squirrel’s head? That is a new one for me! I would love to see a post about the more unusual foods you have tried and if everything ‘tastes like chicken’?

    1. Not everything tastes like chicken 🙂 Growing up in a family of hunters means you get to eat some pretty unusual stuff by most people’s standards. To us, it’s just normal. That squirrel head was a sneaky trick my grandpa did to me when I was little. He was a stinker that way!

  3. Dear Niki,

Thank you so much for including me on your list! I’m really honored, but I’m also very embarrassed as I haven’t said thank you until now. Looking at the date, I realize that it was when I had travelled to Scotland last year and was gone for a month, and just came across this now on a google search, so please accept my apologies!
I love that you love black pudding!! 🙂

    Christina
