Fresh Start for a New Year

Yikes! I just noticed the new 52 Ancestors challenge that Amy Johnson Crow gave us on her blog No Story Too Small … and I’m behind already! I love how she has added weekly themes. Week 1 was a fresh start … and that’s where I’m starting even though I’m a teeny bit late.

I have to admit, I ran out of steam in 2014 … partly because my fall semester at school became it’s own little monster … partly because I felt like I didn’t have enough to write about some of my older ancestors. I was reminded this morning while reading Amy’s post, 5 Things I Learned While Blogging in 2014, that it’s okay not to know much … write about them anyway. Serious blonde moment there! Oh, well … here’s to a fresh start!

I also realized that my creative space at home needed a fresh start. I was to a point where I almost dreaded sitting at my un-inspirational, clunky desk for hours on end researching and writing. So I got rid of it, thanks to the help of my Mirror. It was nice to catch up with her over some manual labor, all the while lamenting the fact that “catching up” used to happen over martinis!

I went from this …

Ugly desk

To this …

Desk

And it only cost me the price of a new cute parsons chair … in red leather 🙂 The rest, I had in storage or the basement.

I love owls. I had this mirror in a corner in the basement. I bought it for $2 at a resale shop several years ago. I often buy things, then never get around to using them for their intended purpose. I added these owl clings … which were also just hanging around my basement!

I found the wooden shelf at the same resale shop. It was $6. I was going to paint it, but it’s handmade and solid, so I just added Noodle’s artwork to the middle and put contact paper inside the nooks.

The photos on the white shelf are us … Noodle at the beach … me, JD and Noodle as an infant … and my “should’ve been sister, T, in December. She’s about to have her own noodle! I can’t wait!

The clock has its own story. My grandpa hand carved the wooden case to fit an old clock that he pulled from a Model T Ford. I get my love of clocks from him. Poor JD … our house is full of clocks, and we only need 1!

Now, I’m all set to sit for hours on end researching and writing. Well, I do have to cook dinner … and help with homework … and be a MOM and wife! Okay, maybe not for hours on end.
