The Longevity of Family Lore: The Ghosts

This post is inspired by the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge by Amy Johnson Crow. The week 3 challenge is “Longevity”. As defined, longevity means long life or long existence. Today, looking for inspiration, I asked Noodle if she knew what longevity meant. She just turned 11 so I didn't expect a "yes". I didn't get one either. After I explained the meaning and told her it was my article theme for this week, she said I should write about ghosts! Yep. Ghosts. According to ...

My Favorite Photo of my Grandma

This post is inspired by the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge by Amy Johnson Crow. The week 2 challenge is "Favorite Photo". My Time Machine The hallway in my house is like a time machine. One that takes you back 150 years through family photos, old cookbooks, and little trinkets that represent various lives well lived. There are photos of people we grew up with and those of people we only met through family stories. I love all of the photos that scatter these shelves. ...

My doppelgänger, Aunt Goldie

"Same" is the theme for week 12 of the 2015 52 Ancestors challenge. I'm always fascinated at how characteristics and features get passed to us from our parents and grandparents. Every now and then, I come across a photo of an ancestor that sends me into utter shock because of a family resemblance. The "sameness" that can appear between generations is sometimes enough to give a person goosebumps!  Family Resemblance  My family has the "Raines nose" ... almost everyone has the same ...

Walker Dog and Stormy Judy

Stormy Weather is an apropos theme for the Week 10 52 Ancestors Challenge. It’s March and, in southern Illinois, we would normally be headed into spring and well on our way to “tornado season”. Not this year … our only two snow storms of the winter have happened in the last two weeks. They’ve been doozies. I’m ready to open my back deck and swimming pool, and mix up a pitcher of sangria to share with friends! Spring is one of my favorite times of year … when everything ...

Everything happens for a reason …

Follow my blog with Bloglovin Good deeds … the 52 ancestors week 8 theme … is an easy one for me. When my grandpa would tell stories about his family, his grandfather, Thomas James Rains, would always enter the tale. There are many characters that intertwine in stories of the Rains family, so I will narrow in on one of the most important: Dr. James Lindsey … not even a Rains! He is, however, my 3rd great grandfather. The Lindsey Family James Lindsey was born on August 23, 1812 in ...

Boucher Cemetery in Murphysboro, IL

Many of my Grandpa's people are buried in Boucher Cemetery in Murphysboro, Illinois. Among them are Grandma Phoebe - Grandpa's mother - and her parents, Scott and Margaret Douglas. Several siblings and many other Raines family connections were laid to rest at Boucher Cemetery. While it isn't really "the family cemetery", I have always felt as though it should be.  When I was a teenager, Grandpa would tell me that it would someday be my job to take care of Grandpa ...

52 Ancestors #29: My Heroes

I'm writing about something a little different for my 52 Ancestors post this week. Earlier this summer, a brick honoring three men in my family was placed at the veteran's memorial at Riverside Park in Murphysboro, Illinois. I stopped by a few nights ago to take some photos. It was bright; the sun was setting behind the memorial and it cast a warm glow ... almost a sparkle ... over everything.  My grandpa took me to Riverside Park a lot when I was little.  The park sits ...

Four Generations of Babies

I absolutely love that I have baby pictures of my Grandma Raines, my mom and me. My mom and I look alike, and sometimes I catch a glimpse of Grandma when I look at Mom. I don't think any of us look alike as babies, though! Grandma, Doris (Schuster) Raines was born in 1923. Mom, Debbie, was born in 1955 and I was born in 1974.  I can't very well show you three generations without showing you the fourth! These are a few of my favorite portraits ...
